The Categories That Shrink First

The earliest changes hit the costs tied directly to a child at home. Grocery and utility bills ease once fewer people are cooking, showering, and running appliances under one roof.

Transportation costs often follow, especially for families who no longer need a second car or a daily tank of gas for the school run.

Activity fees, tutoring, and school costs fade more slowly. They follow an academic calendar, so they're often the last to disappear.

Budget Shift

A 2025 AARP study found that three in four parents are providing financial support to at least one adult child, an average of about $7,000 a year. The kicker: AARP found that more than half of those children could cover their own basic costs.¹

A March 2025 analysis from Savings.com found that working parents who help support an adult child put more than twice as much money toward that support each month as they do toward their own retirement accounts. Remember the old saying, “There are no loans in retirement.”²
